Acrylic
Waterbased painting medium that dries soluable. Available as paint and as an ingredient in water soluable finishes.


Alkyd
A paint thinner soluable painting medium made from synthetic resins. A quick drying synthetic oil paint.


Boxing
Method of mixing paint for uniformity by pouring it back and forth from one container to another.


Cartoon
See also,Thumbnail; a prepatory design or drawing used as a model by painters.


Chroma
The "colourfulness" of colour or how much pigment a colour contains.


Dab hand
An accomplished individual's artistic style; as in "having a dab hand."


Eggshell
A finish with a low degree of gloss resembling that of an egg's shell. A sheen between flat and satin.


Emulsion
General term used to describe paint.


Faux
A French term loosely defined as simulation of a real substance. Simulating wood called, faux bois; simulating marble called, faux marbre.


Finish coats
Also called, clear coat(s); a protective varnish applied as the last coat in the painting process. Finish coat(s) may be water or paint thinner soluable.


Flat
Also called, matte; a finish with no sheen.


Glaze
A translucent film of colour made from paint media. Also used to refer to the media itself.


Glaze medium
A proprietary paint thinner or water soluable medium used to make opaque pigments transluscent.


Glazing technique
Techniques done by manipulating transluscent media over a dry surface, creating unlimited visual effects.


Gloss
Hightest greade of sheen; shiny finish.


Grisaille
Painted decoration done in monochrome tones.


Holiday
An area that is inadvertently skipped during the application of a liquid.


Hue
The family name of a colour according to its wavelength on the visual spectrum.


Media/medium
The liquid that binds pigments together and holds them to a surface. It is also used to refer to a particular liquid substance in a process or technique.


Monochrome
Colour harmony resulting from the use of a singe scale of hue.


Mural
A work of art such as a painting applied to a wall or ceiling, etc.


Oil paint
Paint in which the vehicle is a slow drying oil, such as linseed oil.


Opacity
One who paints either as an artist or as a worker.


Perspective
The technique of representing three dimensional objects and depth relationships on a two dimension surface.


Pigments
Insoluable powders that are suspended in liquid (a vehicle) to make a paint or glaze medium. Pigments can be organic (from animal or vegetable sources) or inorganic (from mineral sources). They give a medium opacity and colour.


Satin
Any finish with a finish between flat and gloss.


Scumble 
A glazing technique rendered by scrubbing glazing liquid/paint to a surface (walls, ceilings, etc.) with a paint brush.


Shade
Any hue plus black.


Tint
Any hue plus white.


Tinting colours
Colourisers, pigments used in altering hues of all types of paint media.


Thumbnail
A sketch or drawing, "cartoon" used as conceptual rendering tool.


Trompe l'oeil
A French term meaning "deceive the eye". A technique in which an illusion of depth is create by using painted light and shadows.


Value
The amount of light and dark in a hue.


Watercolour
A thin water based painting medium that is made up of pigment, gum arabic, glycerin and water.
