Who is Kate?

I've have had a successful decorative painting business since 1992.
My background is in the scenic arts painting sets for the entertainment industry.
I met my Michigan husband at a scenery shop in Los Angeles. We relocated to Michigan the sping of 1995.
Commission paint work is as varied as the client, whether rendering large flower paintings or room murals.
I have, at one time or another painted every room in a home, including a garage!
Work is rendered on-site in acrylic or in my studio in oil on muslin/canvas/linen.
The best part of mural making is that “mood”, “theatre” can be created in an architectural
space to surround the viewer with whatever fantasy or reality is desired.
It is my job to interpret a conceptual idea in imagery that will best fit the space and coordinate with the client's desires.
Most of my work has been in residences but there are some public work on view as well.
My inspiration
Nature holds the most inspiration in terms of colour,
shape and texture. The rest comes from the pleasure
of making an image with paint.
How I work.
The intent of this site is as an on-line portfolio. It
is not intended as a "menu" to choose from. As a
specialty commission painter I design and paint images
for private residences specific to the client's
wishes.
The joy of this work is the custom nature of each
project. Often times incorporating "visual symbology"
of a place or thing that has importance to the
client.
My work encompasses thematic rooms, nursery/playroom
whimsy, landscapes, niches and windows, overdoors,
garlands 'round kitchens; anything really! . . . we are
limited only by our imaginations!
To engage a project, the first step is the
consultation to discuss ideas. After the initial
meeting I render a "thumbnail" or "cartoon" version of
the idea and generate a quote for doing the work.
Upon the client's review of these with any adjustments
a "good faith" deposit secures the commission in my
schedule. This deposit is non-refundable.
Commissions are rendered in one of two ways depending
on the physical requirements of a given space. Some
project requires painting on site. I use acrylic paint
for this after rendering the image in chalk. The chalk
allows for any last minute changes.
The second way to proceed is to paint on cloth
(muslin, canvas or linen) which is done in-studio and
then mounted on-site with wallpaper paste. This is
(when space permits) by far the more "archivally" sound
of the two methods. The cloth can be removed if
desired.
